As a professional emergency manager in Southern Marin and a volunteer in Mill Valley's local government, I'm running for City Council to maintain Mill Valley as a vibrant place to live and work.
While solving complex issues like housing, infrastructure, transportation, and emergency preparedness, we must preserve what makes Mill Valley unique. These issues affect residents of all ages and backgrounds.
No matter where you live in Mill Valley, we share the same concerns and challenges. I'm a first time mom, long term renter, and committed to preserving what makes our town special.
Having lived across the US and overseas, I know how special Mill Valley is. I want to preserve our town while reducing unnecessary barriers to livability.
Housing
Affordable housing: Increase affordable housing options in keeping with Mill Valley's small town culture and capacity.
Housing preservation: Our city should ensure existing affordable housing is maintained long term and to a standard we can be proud of. This means not only maintaining multi-unit dwellings, but incentivizing land owners to create new, affordable single family homes.
Aging with dignity and independence: With 21% of our residents being 65+, more options are necessary to meet the demand for accessible housing that will allow our community to age in place with dignity and the level of independence they choose.
Public safety and disaster preparedness
Emergency and disaster preparedness is a shared responsibility. By working together, we can help keep Mill Valley safe in everyday emergencies and foster the resilience needed to bounce back when disasters happen.
Leverage the community: Local government can only do so much to respond to major disasters. By empowering community groups and individuals to be ready for all emergencies, we massively increase Mill Valley's resilience.
Earthquakes: Our city's critical infrastructure would be affected by even moderate earthquakes. Planned improvements will help to mitigate damage, but our residents need to be equipped to support themselves and neighbors in the aftermath of a quake.
Operational excellence: Our police and fire services excel in daily operations. I will work to champion breaking down silos and improving participation in local and county-level exercises to ensure continued operational excellence in times of disaster.
Climate and sustainability
Through my career in emergency management and local volunteer work, I've witnessed firsthand the impacts of climate change. From sea level rise to wildfire risk, Mill Valley is increasingly vulnerable to climate change. We need to implement long-term adaptation strategies that support our people, environment, and infrastructure.
Preserving natural beauty: Good stewardship and continued investment are needed to preserve our parks for future generations. Through proactive sustainability and risk reduction efforts, like greenhouse gas reduction and vegetation management, we can preserve our natural systems while mitigating direct climate impacts on our city.
Continuing partnerships: Mill Valley's participation in the Marin Climate & Energy Partnership has been highly successful in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. We should continue to work with others at the county and state level to help do our part in the global fight against climate change.
Improving infrastructure: We need to harden our infrastructure against floods, landslides, storms and wildfires. The City already has a Climate Action Plan, and we now need to do the hard work of implementing it.
Supporting homeowners: We can support homeowners, including landlords, to harden their properties against environmental risks. This can include incentivizing sustainable, environmentally conscious improvements. For example, replacing inefficient wood-burning devices and making energy-efficient upgrades.
Mill Valley is a place where residents should feel a sense of belonging and safety at every stage of life. We need to continue investing in public services and maintain our tradition of neighbors helping neighbors.
I will work to preserve Mill Valley’s welcoming small town culture, and natural beauty. We can improve housing, our environment and equity while preserving what makes our town special.
We need to nurture an environment where young families can grow roots, our workforce isn’t priced out of housing, and local businesses thrive.
